Information for Cannabis smokers

There are three main forms of cannabis: marijuana, hashish and hash oil.
Marijuana is the most commonly used form and the most widely used illegal drug in Australia. One in every three Australians have used cannabis at some time in their lives.

It produces immediate effects both pleasant and potentially harmful, and a number of potential long term negative effects. The THC content in the plant is responsible for the major psychoactive effects, the effects on the mind of the user. Smoking cannabis was once promoted a safe drug. These days that has been found to be a myth. Apart form the pleasant effects of cannabis known to smokers, those who smoke regularly and often need to be aware that:

• It affects the lungs even more adversely than cigarette smoking because it is inhaled more deeply and held for longer. Most smokers also smoke cigarettes and this increases the risks to health. One joint or three cones is said to equal three cigarettes!

• It can lead to dependence and all the financial, legal and social costs that go with that.

• It can precipitate psychosis, is associated with schizophrenia and adversely affects those who are suffering depression or anxiety.

• Is associated with damaged thinking ability, attention, concentration and memory.

• The affect on your concentration and co ordination amongst other things makes driving and operating machinery dangerous.

• Smokers may loose motivation and have difficulty with decision making.

• Men who smoke marijuana may have diminished fertility.

• Marijuana smokers who are pregnant increase the risk of damage to their babies from the time of conception and for the first three months in particular Babies may have low birth weight, experience breathing problems and be more susceptible to infections.

Using marijuana is illegal, potentially damaging to your mental and physical  health and can have a less than good impact on your ability to study and learn, to perform complex tasks well, parent your children and manage your other interpersonal relationships. PRE PRESENTATION PREPERATION

Your success rate will be greatly increased if you:   

• Do not drink or smoke any thing for 24 hours before presentation. Then get stuck into identifying and controlling your triggers. Simple things can be surprisingly powerful. Your journey begins now. Keeping busy helps.
• Get rid of all alcohol or smoking related items from your home, car and workplace, such as lighters ashtrays cigarettes, cannabis or alcohol as relevant.
• Wash, dispose of or relocate items that smell of your substance, don't forget rubbish bins and your car.
• Re arrange your social life so as to avoid smokers and drinkers if you can. Pubs, clubs and parties are best avoided in the early stages. Such settings are very high risk situations for all quitters. This will not last for ever!
• Eliminate or reduce any other triggers that you can. We will discuss ways of managing those you cannot during your visits. Make your list soon.
• Let your family and friends know you are trying to improve your health and life by quitting or cutting back and enlist their support. Really good friends will readily give it. Some of them may even be relieved to hear your news.
• Let all visitors to your home know that it is now a smoke free/alcohol free zone. Negotiate with partners as best you can.

Sometimes in this action phase of your desire to change doubts to arise. Some people may start to think that they don't have enough will power to take these and other necessary steps to change their behavior.
